TOEFL Practice

Hi everyone,

We will have our TOEFL exam on Saturday, October 19th. We have been studying for the TOEFL the entire semester with the timed reading, listening and grammar activities as well as the TOEFL exams. We have already looked at most of these power points, but I would like you to re-familiarize yourself with them. You will also be getting a TOEFL test prep booklet from me that I hope you will study over the break. On Monday, we will be in lab 1 to finish our final drafts of our papers (which you must attend to get points for your final draft essay), but we will also do TOEFL prep. On Wednesday the 16th, we will complete our TOEFL prep. Please do not miss this class.

Homework Schedule and Other Things

Hi guys,

If you don't already have the homework schedule from the first blog post, here it is again.  Your homework for next week is to complete pages 128 and 129.

I'm posting the videos we watched in class today in case you missed the first one, or if you are interested in watching the second one again.

Here is a BBC News article about what fracking is and environmental concerns.

Our Essay

Hi everyone,

Please check your blackboard mail. If I did not approve your sources, you must find new sources and show them to me today before you start to write.

Today you should be finished with your outline and you will write you essay. Please use your outline to guide you. Please review p. 117 for the guidelines of your essay.

Also, please look at this PDF file about hooks in your introductory paragraph if you have any questions about how to write a good hook. You don't have to complete it, but I thought it could help you.

These two things might help you:

Purdue's site describes the process of writing a persuasive paragraph.

You will send me your essay today through Blackboard as an attachment .doc file. I will correct your essay and give it back to you and you will rewrite your essay in about 2 weeks.

Thanks!

Homework and Literature

Hi everyone,

So for your long week off you have two homework assignments. First, the Mandela article, and second, the Sinek How Great Leaders Inspire Action activity. Watch the video, do the listening activity and then answer the questions.

In class we were talking about reading for pleasure. Here is a great short story by author, David Sedaris, about his experience with language learning. I think you'll enjoy it. There is also a vocabulary activity at the end. Feel free to ask me questions about this if you want, but this is not for homework, just for fun if you want to practice.

If you would like some listening practice, check out some of Sedaris' spoken word on National Public Radio. Check back in a couple days and at the top of the page you will see a link to extra practice activities.

Thanks and have a great week!

Welcome to the First Day of Class!

Hello and Welcome to Contenido 2 Professional Development! We will be using this blog to access files, communicate about the class, homework and extra TOEFL prep help.

Right now, it seems that only people using computers can comment on the blog, not people on phones or tablets. I will try to fix this, but you can always use the computer labs at school to comment on the blog before leaving Uninorte.

The first important files you need are the class syllabus and the homework schedule. The homework schedule has all the dates of when something is due for class. This will keep you organized, or if you miss class, you will always know what you are expected to do for the following class.

I will create a separate page for files later, but for now the files are here: Syllabus  and Homework

Now, I want to know that you have accessed the blog. Please comment below on what was your favorite English class and why?

Thanks everyone and I look forward to the upcoming semester with you!!
